I photographed this black wolf in Yellowstone as it moved through a shallow river channel, pausing briefly with its head low and attention focused downstream. The wolf was working along the edge of the water, using the river corridor as a travel route through the winter landscape. Snow and ice lined the banks, and the muted light from an overcast sky flattened the scene, allowing the wolf’s dark coat to stand out against the surroundings.
What made this moment challenging was the constant movement and shifting terrain. The wolf never stayed in one place for long, moving between rocks and water with purpose, which made framing and focus difficult. I had to track it continuously while managing exposure between the reflective water and darker subject, knowing the opportunity would disappear as soon as it moved out of view.
My wildlife photography grows out of time in the field — returning to the same habitats, watching behavior unfold, and learning how weather, season, light, and place shape each encounter. I’m rarely interested in isolated moments alone. What matters to me is the deeper relationship between the animal, its environment, and the rhythm of the natural world around it.
Over time, I’ve found that the strongest wildlife images come from patience, observation, and respect. The more I slow down, the more I begin to notice subtle behavior, movement, timing, and mood — the small details that reveal something real about the life of the animal and the place it inhabits.
