I photographed a snowy owl (Bubo scandiacus) lifting off from a granite ledge along the Maine coastline, captured in my image "All Wisdom". The owl had been perched low against the rock, then launched suddenly with prey secured in its talons, wings sweeping upward to gain lift in the coastal wind. The scene unfolded across a rugged shoreline of exposed stone, tide pools, and scattered snow patches, with cold winter light flattening the color palette. The bird’s white plumage stood in stark contrast to the darker rock and ocean textures behind it.
This moment happened quickly, with only a brief window to react as the owl transitioned from stillness to flight. The wind off the ocean added unpredictability, affecting both the bird’s trajectory and my ability to maintain focus. What stood out was the power in the takeoff — a controlled burst of motion followed by immediate stability in the air. Capturing the full wing extension and visible prey required anticipating the movement and staying locked on through the initial lift.
My wildlife photography is built on time in the field — learning animal behavior, understanding habitat, and returning to the same places across seasons to observe patterns that most people never see.
Over time, I’ve found that the strongest wildlife images come from patience, observation, and respect. The more I slow down, the more I begin to notice subtle behavior, movement, timing, and mood — the small details that reveal something real about the life of the animal and the place it inhabits.
