I photographed this bull elk in winter as it stood still in fresh snow, facing directly toward me with a steady, alert posture. Its breath was visible in the cold air, and snow had begun to collect along its fur and antlers. The scene unfolded in open winter habitat where the background dropped away into clean white, isolating the animal and emphasizing its presence.
What made this moment work was the stillness. The elk held its position just long enough for a clean, centered composition, something that doesn’t happen often with large mammals that are constantly shifting or scanning their surroundings. The flat winter light removed distractions, but it also required precise exposure to retain detail in both the snow and the animal’s darker tones.
My wildlife photography grows out of time in the field — returning to the same habitats, watching behavior unfold, and learning how weather, season, light, and place shape each encounter. I’m rarely interested in isolated moments alone. What matters to me is the deeper relationship between the animal, its environment, and the rhythm of the natural world around it.
Over time, I’ve found that the strongest wildlife images come from patience, observation, and respect. The more I slow down, the more I begin to notice subtle behavior, movement, timing, and mood — the small details that reveal something real about the life of the animal and the place it inhabits.
