American Alligator — Edge of Water, Aransas National Wildlife Refuge
I observed this American alligator (Alligator mississippiensis) resting at the edge of a shallow wetland within Aransas National Wildlife Refuge along the Texas Gulf Coast. Its body was positioned low against the ground, with only the head elevated, a posture that allows for both concealment and awareness of surrounding movement. The habitat was a mix of marsh and coastal wetland, where freshwater and saltwater systems intersect and support a wide range of species. The light was warm and low, likely late afternoon, accentuating the texture of its scales and the subtle contours of its form.
What made this moment compelling was the stillness — a controlled, deliberate pause that defines much of alligator behavior outside of active feeding. Working at a safe and respectful distance, I had to remain aware of both position and angle, as even slight movement can alter their response. The conditions required patience, with minimal movement and careful framing to avoid disturbance. Its eyes remained fixed and alert, scanning the environment, a reminder that even in stillness, these animals are actively engaged with their surroundings.
