I photographed this European starling (Sturnus vulgaris) in mid-flight as it approached a cavity nest carved into a weathered wooden post, carrying food for its nestlings. The bird’s wings were fully extended as it slowed its approach, preparing to land at the entrance where chicks were waiting inside. This took place in a semi-open habitat with scattered trees and human-made structures, during the breeding season when adults make repeated feeding trips throughout the day. The light was bright and direct, likely midday, illuminating both the iridescence of the starling’s plumage and the texture of the nesting site.
What made this moment precise was the timing required to capture the exact instant before landing, when wing position and body alignment are most defined. The bird’s flight path was fast and direct, leaving only a brief window to frame both the subject and the nest entrance. The challenge was anticipating the return trajectory, as feeding intervals are irregular and quick. Subtle wing adjustments and body angle revealed controlled deceleration, a critical phase in flight that allows accurate entry into tight nesting spaces.
