“Precious Light” came from a quiet morning at Lake Mattamuskeet, where I was set up before sunrise watching the horizon begin to shift. The water was calm, and the cypress trees stood in clean silhouette, creating a simple structure against the sky. What caught my attention was how the light began to build behind them, gradually revealing shape and contrast.
As the sun approached the horizon, the sky moved through deep reds and oranges, and those tones reflected softly across the water. Timing was critical — the window where the color peaks and the silhouettes remain defined is short. I had to watch the balance between light and shadow carefully, making sure the scene held its clarity as the brightness increased.
