I photographed this bald eagle as it moved across the sky at sunset over Blackwater National Wildlife Refuge, wings fully extended as it rode the last thermals of the day. The bird held a steady glide, adjusting slightly with the wind while passing through a clean band of light along the horizon. The scene unfolded in open airspace above the marsh, with the sky transitioning into warm evening tones behind it.
What made this moment work was the alignment of light and position. The eagle crossed directly through the brightest part of the sky, creating a clean silhouette without distractions. I had to react quickly and frame precisely, knowing the window for that exact shape and placement would last only a second before the bird shifted out of the light.
My wildlife photography grows out of time in the field — returning to the same habitats, watching behavior unfold, and learning how weather, season, light, and place shape each encounter. I’m rarely interested in isolated moments alone. What matters to me is the deeper relationship between the animal, its environment, and the rhythm of the natural world around it.
Over time, I’ve found that the strongest wildlife images come from patience, observation, and respect. The more I slow down, the more I begin to notice subtle behavior, movement, timing, and mood — the small details that reveal something real about the life of the animal and the place it inhabits.
